Below are our most recent Announcements in full. You can also sign up to receive these Announcements on  email by contacting us.

Due to Covid restrictions, we have a limited amount of in-person events and postings. Stay tuned or join our email list to be informed of upcoming events.

But do check out our calendar for what's happening virtually, in smaller outdoor groups and on Zoom.

A family of ...

LAST MONDAY'S DANCE WITH SCOTTY SHARRER - We had a great time last Monday with Scotty calling and several visitors joining us. Some dancers celebrated various holidays. There were four squares of dancers. The evening ended with an energetic Advanced tip. A few pictures from Monday are at the end of this email.

UNFORTUNATE NEWS ABOUT FLIP THE FLAMINGO! - Due to the concerns generated by the current number of covid cases, we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year's fly-in. We have started receiving cancellations from out-of-town dancers, and a decision was required before some significant financial commitments needed to be made. The board agonized over this decision, but we felt like this was right at this time.

However, please do not book that weekend yet (at least the Sunday and Monday), or discard your Wallmart costumes. Depending on what happens in the next couple of weeks, we are hoping to have a local "mini fly-in". There will be more news about this soon.

ATLANTA FLY-IN -PROMENADE DOWN PEACHTREE HAS BEEN CANCELLED - This is a disappointment for many of us, but we understand the concern and will look forward to participating in this fly-in in 2022.

OPEN HOUSE FOR NEW DANCERS - January 24 and 31. Be thinking about the people you know who are fun and aren't yet square dancers. We'd love to have them try it and enjoy the fun that we have together. There is a copy of the flyer for the open houses at the bottom of this email, and  hard copies will be available at club as well.

DO YOU HAVE IDEAS FOR DANCE THEMES? - When we have a special dance, we usually incorporate a square dance call with some other special theme (read, "costume opportunity"). Please let Dan know if you have ideas, particularly any that would allow us to dress up in capes or robes of some sort.

MAINSTREAM  (Social Square Dancing) - Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 or 9:00 - Dancing with Scotty Sharrer.
PLUS DANCING - We'll continue the evening with some Plus tips and possibly an Advanced tip.

NO EARLY REVIEW FOR NEW DANCERS -  There will be no early review for the next couple of weeks, at least until the new class starts.

OPEN HOUSE _ BEGINNING  (Social Square Dancing) - Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 - Bring your fun friends for this introduction to square dancing. A copy of the flyer is attached at the end of this email. All new dancers dance for free. Also, January birthdays will be celebrated. There will be cake.

THURSDAYS: ADVANCED  - Advanced dancing this Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00.  J.R. will be back in town and will call for us. The following Thursday we will start a C-1 workshop from 6:30 until 7:00. If there are enough dancers, we will adjust the time the following week.

CHALLENGE 1 - We are going to resume in some fashion the C-1 workshop on Thursdays in the second part of January or first part of February. Please let Dan know if you are interested. We will need to have a minimum of
10 dancers to begin.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP FOR 2022 - If you have not yet joined Suncoast Squares for 2022, membership forms are available at club. The annual dues are $15, used mostly to cover insurance for our dancers. If you are not attending club at the present time but would like to renew your membership, please respond to this email and I will forward a form to you. It can be completed and sent to our P.O. Box.

RESOURCES TO LEARN OR REVIEW SQUARE DANCE CALLS - For those of you who wish to review calls or get a head start on learning new calls, there are links to a couple fo teaching websites on the Suncoast Squares website: Go to and look for the ribbon menu on the top of the page. Select "More" on the right, and then select "Resources".

Links to two different websites may be helpful to you:

Taminations - the calls are listed and then illustrated by little emojis. Chose "SSD" if you are in the new class, or chose the appropriate level for other calls.

Saddlebrook Squares - There are lessons systematically going through the calls. The calls are illustrated by traditional square dancers, which makes the "girls" and "boys" more easily identified than they are in our club (smile). Find the square dance lessons in the middle of the page and look for Mainstream if you are in our new class (This is the SSD level we are learning plus a few more calls). You should be able to find all the calls that we have learned.

Some have asked about masks because of new CDC guidance. Please  wear a mask while dancing if you have not been vaccinated. If you have been vaccinated, please use your best judgment. We treasure every dancer. You are the reason we exist, and we want you to be safe and comfortable.

A NOTE TO THOSE NOT DANCING BECAUSE OF COVID AND OTHER HEALTH CONCERNS - First of all, we miss you. You are definitely not forgotten. Secondly, we understand completely. Covid has thrown a curve ball into all of our lives, and, just when we thought things were getting better, unfortunately they got worse again. The decision about where you feel comfortable and safe is an individual one, and sometimes not an easy one. We hope that there will be a time when many more of us feel comfortable gathering and dancing together. For now, we are dancing with those in our group who feel safe in our current setting. We realize that this group may change, even from week to week. We are doing our best to be thoughtful and respectful of everyone. We send "yellow rocks" to all of you, especially to those we haven't been able to see for a long time. We look forward to seeing you when things improve.

WHERE WE DANCE : The Garden Club of Saint Petersburg, is located at 500 Sunset Dr. S, Saint Petersburg, FL 33707. Lots of parking on the circle in front and on the lawn parking areas.

A NOTE ABOUT SECURITY - Please be sure your car is locked when you attend our dances. One of our members had valuables taken from her car while she was dancing. We want to be sure this does not happen again.

A small group of Suncoast Squares meets at Lake Seminole Park on Fridays at 11:30 for a walk and then a picnic (bring your own food). We meet at Pavilion 9. Contact Alan or Sue if you have questions about this activity. We WILL meet for the walk in the park this Friday.

After two years of virtual conventions, we look forward next year to an in-person convention in Minneapolis. Note that the dates are different from our typical convention dates. The convention will be held May 27-29. You may register for the convention or book hotel rooms by going to the IAGSDC website: Find the box for Twincity Spin 2022 (with the blue outline). You can elect to register or make hotel reservations. (I have registered for the convention, and will be attending).

MISSING EMAILS - If you didn't receive the weekly email, you won't see this item (I get it). But some members have not been receiving the emails. If they aren't opened for a while, the new website classifies these people as "inactive" and doesn't want to send them emails. If you know of someone who isn't receiving emails, we have a temporary workaround. Just let me know who they are. Thanks.
