Suncoast Squares is the premier LGBTQ+ square dance club of Florida’s Gulf Coast. We welcome individuals and couples of all genders and orientations into our friendly and energetic "social club with a dancing habit."

We have no dress code, dance to contemporary music and keep the pace lively and fun. Read more about what makes our Club special on our About Us and Our Social Side pages.

Our current Announcements are below. You can find our Class Schedule and Dance Location at the bottom of every page. Other Events are listed on our Calendar

UPDATE: Unfortunately, Flip the Flamingo, our Annual 4-day Fly-In, has been cancelled for 2022.  For details, go our Annual Fly-In page on this website.

Below are our most recent Announcements in full. You can also sign up to receive these Announcements on  email by contacting us.

MONDAY EVENING BIRTHDAY, ANNIVERSARY, WEDDING CELEBRATION - Join us for a special evening this Monday. We will have a pot luck dinner in addition to special recognition of May birthdays, May anniversaries, and a May wedding. Of course there will be regular dancing at both the Social Square Dance level and the Plus level. We meet at the Garden Club at 7:00. Please join us if you are able.

PICNIC/POOL PARTY AT JUDY'S LAST SUNDAY AFTERNOON - We had a great time last Sunday afternoon at Judy's place. We took full advantage of the pool and the zip line. It was great to spend time with friends and to share a meal together. Special thanks to Judy and Robin for inviting us and for providing hot dogs and fixings. And thanks to all who attended. A couple of pictures are attached at the end of this email.

OPEN HOUSES IN THE FUTURE - It will be at least a couple of months before we welcome brand new dancers, but keep a list of any fun friends who might we interested in this activity in the future.

EARLY REVIEW FOR NEW DANCERS - There will NOT be an early review session this week. Joey is out of town, and we will be busy setting up for the evening's celebration. The review session will be back the following Monday.

SOCIAL SQUARE DANCING - Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 - Come and support our newest class of dancers. It's a good review for everyone, and it also helps the new class. We  have some fun new dancers in the new class. Let's support these dancers, as it will be a while before we have another Open House.

PLUS CLASS AND DANCING - Join us for  Plus class and dancing after the annual meeting. All who have graduated from SSD or Mainstream are invited to participate.

THURSDAYS: ADVANCED AND CHALLENGE - Advanced dancing on Thursday from 7:10 until 9:00.  There will be a C-1 Workshop from 6:30 until 7:10. We hope to expand this workshop to an hour soon. (Note that we've added 10 minutes to the C-1 session this week).

RESOURCES TO LEARN OR REVIEW SQUARE DANCE CALLS - For those of you who wish to review calls or get a head start on learning new calls, there are links to a couple fo teaching websites on the Suncoast Squares website: Go to and look for the ribbon menu on the top of the page. Select "More" on the right, and then select "Resources".

Links to two different websites may be helpful to you:

Taminations - the calls are listed and then illustrated by little emojis. Chose "SSD" if you are in the new class, or chose the appropriate level for other calls.

Saddlebrook Squares - There are lessons systematically going through the calls. The calls are illustrated by traditional square dancers, which makes the "girls" and "boys" more easily identified than they are in our club (smile). Find the square dance lessons in the middle of the page and look for Mainstream if you are in our new class (This is the SSD level we are learning plus a few more calls). You should be able to find all the calls that we have learned.

Some have asked about masks because of new CDC guidance. Please  wear a mask while dancing if you have not been vaccinated. If you have been vaccinated, please use your best judgment. We treasure every dancer. You are the reason we exist, and we want you to be safe and comfortable.

A NOTE TO THOSE NOT DANCING BECAUSE OF COVID AND OTHER HEALTH CONCERNS - First of all, we miss you. You are definitely not forgotten. Secondly, we understand completely. Covid has thrown a curve ball into all of our lives, and, just when we thought things were getting better, unfortunately they got worse again. The decision about where you feel comfortable and safe is an individual one, and sometimes not an easy one. We hope that there will be a time when many more of us feel comfortable gathering and dancing together. For now, we are dancing with those in our group who feel safe in our current setting. We realize that this group may change, even from week to week. We are doing our best to be thoughtful and respectful of everyone. We send "yellow rocks" to all of you, especially to those we haven't been able to see for a long time. We look forward to seeing you when things improve.

WHERE WE DANCE: The Garden Club of Saint Petersburg, is located at 500 Sunset Dr. S, Saint Petersburg, FL 33707. Lots of parking on the circle in front and on the lawn parking areas.

OPEN HOUSES IN THE FUTURE - It will be at least a couple of months before we welcome brand new dancers, but keep a list of any fun friends who might we interested in this activity in the future.

A NOTE ABOUT SECURITY - Please be sure your car is locked when you attend our dances. One of our members had valuables taken from her car while she was dancing. We want to be sure this does not happen again.

A small group of Suncoast Squares meets at Lake Seminole Park on Fridays at 11:30 for a walk and then a picnic (bring your own food). We meet at Pavilion 9. Contact Alan or Sue if you have questions about this activity. We will meet for the walk in the park this Friday.

We have been told that the convention WILL TAKE PLACE  (barring nuclear war). The convention committee is locked into the hotel this year, so there will not be a cancellation, even if it is a smaller event than usual. If you plan to go, it would be a good time to register and book your hotel room.

It has recently been announced that masks will be required in the dancing halls.

After two years of virtual conventions, we look forward this year to an in-person convention in Minneapolis. Note that the dates are different from our typical convention dates. The convention will be held May 27-29. You may register for the convention or book hotel rooms by going to the IAGSDC website: Find the box for Twincity Spin 2022 (with the blue outline). You can elect to register or make hotel reservations. (I have registered for the convention, and will be attending).

NOTE TO CONVENTION ATTENDEES - If you are attending the convention and would like to be in the Suncoast Squares picture, please wear a Suncoast Squares vest (if you have one) or any black vest with a white polo shirt. If this doesn't work for you, please wear black and white. Also, for the trail end dance, wear any flamingo finery that you have accumulated over the years. Thank you.

MISSING EMAILS - If you didn't receive the weekly email, you won't see this item (I get it). But some members have not been receiving the emails. If they aren't opened for a while, the new website classifies these people as "inactive" and doesn't want to send them emails. If you know of someone who isn't receiving emails, we have a temporary workaround. Just let me know who they are. Thanks.

Due to Covid restrictions, we have a limited amount of in-person events and postings. Stay tuned or join our email list to be informed of upcoming events.

But do check out our calendar for what's happening virtually, in smaller outdoor groups and on Zoom.
