SAINT PETE PRIDE IS COMING UP IN JUNE - We would like to participate this year. Richard Isaacs is working on getting a Suncoast Squares contingent in this year's Pride parade, which will take place on June 24. He will be looking for dancers who can last the length of the parade while doing some dancing. He will also be looking for others who can help in various ways. Please consider a way that you can participate in this project. Robin will be driving his truck, and David Roberts will be calling for dancers.
MONDAY, from 7:00 until 9:30 - Tropical Dance with Scotty Sharrer on Memorial Day. Everyone is invited. Scotty will alternate levels and we will all enjoy his calling and dancing together. There will be an Advanced tip at the end of the night in enough Advanced dancers are present. There will be tips for the beginners as well as tips at the Plus level. Wear you grass skirts and leis and tropical shirts. We will also celebrate April and May birthdays. There will be cake. Scotty will be back to call for us again on July 31st and September 4th. We'll post the themes for those dances as we get closer.
MAY (AND ANY LEFT OVER APRIL) BIRTHDAYS CELEBRATED - MAY 29
NO DANCING THE WEEKS OF JUNE 5 and JULY 3 - There will be no dancing, either Monday or Thursday, the week of June 6 or the week of July3. The Garden Club is used for another event the week in June. This is an annual event that we were told about when we first arranged dancing at the Garden Club. Our callers will all be out of town the week of July 3. That is also the week of the IAGSDC convention in Ottawa, Canada.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INTRO/REVIEW/WARM UP THIS WEEK! - The review session will take place this week. New dancers are encouraged to attend these sessions for a review of calls that have been taught previously. This session is a little slower paced, so it's a good warm up for the dancing that follows. This is held from 6:30 until 7:00, just before the regular Social Square Dancing begins. Joey will be teaching. Angels are always needed and welcome.
MONDAY, from 7:00 until 9:30 - Dancing with Scotty Sherrer - There will be an Advanced tip at the end of the night in enough Advanced dancers are present. There will be tips for the beginners as well as tips at the Plus level. Wear you grass skirts and leis and tropical shirts..
THIS THURSDAY: ADVANCED AND - The C-1 class is from 6:30 to 7:30 and the Advanced class is from 7:35 until 9:00. Mike Shagina will be calling. We started from the beginning with A1 a few weeks ago, and we'll be following the Callerlab recommended teaching order.
WHERE WE DANCE: The Garden Club of Saint Petersburg, is located at 500 Sunset Dr. S, Saint Petersburg, FL 33707. Lots of parking on the circle in front and on the lawn parking areas.
RESOURCES TO LEARN OR REVIEW SQUARE DANCE CALLS - For those of you who wish to review calls or get a head start on learning new calls, there are links to a couple of teaching websites on the Suncoast Squares website: Go to suncoastsquares.com and look for the ribbon menu on the top of the page. Select "More" on the right, and then select "Resources".
Links to two different websites may be helpful to you:
Taminations - the calls are listed and then illustrated by little emojis. Chose "SSD" if you are in the new class, or chose the appropriate level for other calls.
Saddlebrook Squares - There are lessons systematically going through the calls. The calls are illustrated by traditional square dancers, which makes the "girls" and "boys" more easily identified than they are in our club (smile). Find the square dance lessons in the middle of the page and look for Mainstream if you are in our new class (This is the SSD level we are learning plus a few more calls). You should be able to find all the calls that we have learned.
TO MASK OR NOT TO MASK
Some have asked about masks because of new CDC guidance. Please wear a mask while dancing if you have not been vaccinated. If you have been vaccinated, please use your best judgment. We treasure every dancer. You are the reason we exist, and we want you to be safe and comfortable.
A NOTE ABOUT SECURITY - Please be sure your car is locked when you attend our dances.
FRIDAY WALK
A small group of Suncoast Squares meets at Lake Seminole Park on Fridays at 11:30 for a walk and then a picnic (bring your own food). We meet at Pavilion 9. Contact Alan or Sue if you have questions about this activity. We will meet for the walk in the park this Friday.
THE 2023 IAGSDC (International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs) CONVENTION - will be held in Ottawa, Canada. If you are considering attending, now would be a good time to check to make sure that your passport will be valid for July of 2023.It would also be a good time to register on the IAGSDC website and to make your room reservations. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to housing at the convention, please check with Joe Sass or Dan
